Norms and Regulations of the Camp

The main rule is the Complete Immersion rule. This must be adhered to at all times. Alcohol is strictly forbidden at all times for all students. Smoking is NOT allowed on campus. No mobile phones on campus during lessons and activities.

Groups - Ages

Students from 7 to 19 years old.
They are divided into 4 groups and live completely separated with different timetables and programmes. We do give the younger ones the extra care parents are expecting.

KIDS = 7, 8, 9 & 10
TEENS = 11, 12 & 13
JUNIORS = 14 & 15
SENIORS = 16+

Each programme runs separately with an independent timetable and its own course director.

Last summer, we employed 40 teachers and 25 Activity Organisers and 4 office staff and management (=72 staff) and we welcomed more than 250 students per week of 30 different nationalities. Every year we have a ratio of faculty staff to students of 1:3 or 1:4.

Downe House is one of the most prestigious boarding schools in England. It is set in its own grounds of 110 acres, and boasts playing fields, 17 tennis courts, an indoor heated swimming pool (25 m), a new gymnasium with fitness room, 3 glass-backed squash courts and an art room as well as a theatre.

  • Doubles and triples for Juniors
  • Doubles, triples & quads for Teens
  • 2-5 students per room for Kids

Academic programme

Our concept is “Immersion in English at all times.” This means that the students have to speak English at all times, during classes, but also during meals, activities… Lessons are highly intensive, but fun! The students have 32 lessons a week in groups of average 6-7 students (max. 10) from the same level and age. TEENS, JUNIORS & SENIORS have the same programme. KIDS have a different programme (see below). The staff are all trained and EFL (English as a Foreign language) experienced.

Every weekday, (with the exception of the academic excursion) will consist of nine 45 minute lessons:

Four lessons per day will be devoted to core language training skills – reading, writing, speaking and listening, (including grammar). We will be using the ‘Cutting Edge’ books in class and students will have their own workbook.

Lesson 5&6 will be devoted to one of six topics which students may choose to study over the two week period. These are detailed below.alt

The six elective topics that students will be able to choose from are:

Film Making, School News Team, Exams Preparation, Film Studies, Business English, English for Academic Purposes

Lesson 7 will deal with electronic communication in what we call E-com lessons. The aim of these computer-based lessons will be to improve students’ knowledge about the use of computers and computer programs as well as their writing skills.

Lesson 8 will be devoted to tutorials and preparation for entertainments evening.

Entertainments evening is a central feature of the weekly program at LINES. Every class has to present an item which is devised and written by themselves. All students have to be onstage and each one should have a speaking part, however brief. Teachers play a vital role in motivating, organising and producing these entertainment items. The Entertainments Evening is run on competitive lines and all teachers and AOs vote for the best item to be announced at the end of the evening. There are two sessions a week for entertainments preparation Entertainments Evening takes place on Friday nights from 7pm for Kids and Teens, and 7.30pm for Juniors and Seniors.

Tutorial periods are to provide time for students to be with their ‘home base’ teacher. It is an opportunity to do homework pre-excursion and post-excursion work, student evaluations and all other ‘housekeeping’ tasks.

Special programme for very young learners aged 7 to 9: KIDS

“First Time Away” is a pedagogical programme adapted for our very young learners; the kid aged 7 to 9. It is based on project learning with the aim of keeping it as intensive as possible but creative at the same time. These little students are also completely separated from the older students with an independent timetable, a course director and their own area “The Secret Garden”.

They also have their own little mascot BENJAMIN BEAR!

All entrance fees of these trips are included in the price.

Every two weeks, we organise an optional daily excursion to a fun park (Legoland for the younger learners – Thorpe Park for the older ones) at the cost of £60, which includes entrance and transfer and which has to be paid on site.

What to Pack:

Clothesalt

It can be quite cool during the summer. Students all dress very casually and jeans are fine. A warm woollen jumper or thick sweatshirt and a jacket of some sort will be invaluable, also comfortable walking shoes. Warm-weather clothing may equally well be needed. Please include some smart clothes for the farewell evening! Bring a dressing gown for going to the showers or bathroom. Some students like to have slippers to wear in the bedroom area. When packing, bear in mind that it will not be possible to have clean clothes every day…Shoes for the squash courts and gym must be white-soled and non-marking, and must be reserved for indoor use only.

Sports & Leisure Clothes & Equipment

You may also bring your travel clock, camera or video camera, a radio, musical instruments, your tennis and squash racquets if you wish to play these sports, not forgetting your swimsuit and pool towel.

Equipment for class
